Cruising Power Must Bring

Cruising Travel Power Must Haves

So, you have booked that cruise. Congrats now it is time to get ready and purchase some items to bring along for your stateroom. In this article, I will review some of my must haves when it comes to power on a cruise ship.

Power, with all of the electronics we carry, you definitely need some place to charge them all. Normally, there is a single 110v US outlet location in the stateroom and another in the bathroom. You will also find a European outlet partnered with them. I know I carry a laptop, cell phone, camera and a fan. I remember on one of our first cruises, I unplugged the TV just to get another outlet. It is not as simple as bringing an outlet strip on board. I did that on an early cruise and had it confiscated because it had a surge suppressor in it. The good news is there are a few ways to increase your charging sources. As I travel already for work, I have learned to travel lighter. Rather than travel with a power strip and power adaptors, I found this great little gadget that can charge all of the gear I travel with and use only a single outlet and some USB cables.

This device is all that I need when traveling and carry this in my backpack. It has enough power so I may use and charge my Surface Pro, Samsung 24 Ultra, iPhone 14, Camera, Gimbal and fan. This unit has a bit of weight to it, but not having to bring each devices charging brick and power strip make up for it. This device has a total output of 220 watts. One port is at 65w for larger draw units like my Surface Pro. The other ports available are at 30w, 20w and 15w for fast charging many devices.

For travel even lighter backpack, there is a smaller power charger for mobile devices. This one has eight ports split evenly with USB-a and USB-c ports. However, this one only supplies a total of 152 watts of power.

I use this one for phones and external batteries. I have used this one when in a pinch to charge my surface pro, but it was not strong enough to charge and use. It is a bit lighter than the 220-watt unit, but still lets me charge all I need overnight to be ready for the next day’s adventure.

Because I am always prepared, I will throw a back-up plan into the suitcase. It goes into the suitcase for when the kids forget to pack their charging packs. This one also has additional 110v outlets for added use.

This one is the lightest of all the units. It does come with limitations. The total combined power output for all of the USB ports (2 USB-a & 2 USB-c) is 15 watts. It still gets the job done overnight charging phones and tablets. Plus, you have use of additional 120v outlets.

That wraps up my most important section of Power. Now onto a cool little hack for when in your stateroom. Guess what? You will not find any clocks in your stateroom. And if you are in an interior room, there is no ambient light. I fixed this little issue with an app on my tablet or phone. The app I use is Alarm Clock HD. I use the free version and just swipe away the advertisements when it loads up. The app includes an alarm feature and can emit enough light to see in the room. And, if it is too bright, you can dim it.
