Decorating your Cruise Cabin Door

Cruise Cabin Door Decorating

What a great idea. Cabin doors all look alike. Why not stand out from the rest. It helps finding your room after a long day of partying, if you catch my drift.

We started decorating our door as a fun way to connect with our family in other cabins. It started out small, with a little dry erase board for us to let each other know where we were going to be. And our last cruise, you could barely see the door.

Now when decorating your cabin door, always check with your cruise company to see if they allow and what restrictions they have. We did have battery operated Tiki light hung on our door and were kindly asked to remove. They could cause directional issues in case of emergencies.

Your cruise cabin door is usually a narrow 30 inches wide, unless you have an ADA room where it is 36 inches wide. The door is also clad in a metal surface and a strong magnet can be used. We have also used double sided mounting tabs. These tabs need to be easily removed leaving no residue. Both links below have been used by us while cruising.

We have used party tablecloths cut to size as our back drops. For props, we hit thrift shops and dollar stores. We can normally stay under $15 for our decorations. We normally mockup our decorations cutting the tablecloth into a 24-inch by 48-inch layout. We then prepare the backdrop with the double stick tape, starting at the four corners and then every 6 inches or so around the perimeter. We also prepare our props in the same manner. We learned on our last cruise that some of the props needed better adhesion to have the double stick tabs stay in place. At home, we will be able to add a dab of gorilla glue to the prop. It should set nicely and stayed on the door till we remove it.

There may also be a sconce on the side of your door where the cruise line may leave paperwork. This little area is another possible area for decorating. We normally attach our dry erase board there for family, friends and fellow cruisers to leave notes. We bring one that is no larger than a sheet of paper and is magnetic.

You will find your cabin walls and ceiling may also be metal clad and the magnetic hooks could be used for interior decorating too.

Please remember to remove all traces of your decorations before you depart. We do love decorating our doors and would hate to have the cruise lines restrict this cool little fun because of a few leaving a mess from decorating cabin doors.
